About this artwork
Small orange windows glow along the flank of the wreck, and they are the reason the picture unsettles. A ship broken on an ice shelf ought to be dead; this one has its lights on. Whatever is inside has not left, and that is established without a single figure being put on deck.
The hull lies canted hard to the left, ribs sprung open along the bow, one mast still upright with a torn spar hanging from it. Snow has drifted along the upper works and into the broken planking, and thin icicles hang from the keel where it clears the water.
A single hooded figure stands in the shallows at the lower left, small, pale-robed, facing the wreck with his back to us. The gap between him and the ship is the largest empty space in the composition, and it is doing all the narrative work.
The register is cold throughout: blue-grey water, blue-grey mountains, a bruised sky with birds strung across it, and a cluster of red-roofed buildings glowing faintly on the far right. Part of our Assassin's Creed collection, alongside the axeman walking through deep snow, the collection's other winter piece.
