Nicolas Odinet: a self-taught painter from Normandy

From the pharmacy counter to full-time painting

Nicolas Odinet was born in Le Havre in 1953 and considers himself self-taught. Painting was set aside for a long while: he played field hockey in Paris and read pharmacy at the University of Rouen, then in 1985 took over a pharmacy in the centre of Rouen. The pull of painting returned, and he gave it every free hour before deciding, in 1997, to devote himself to it entirely. He had been showing his work since 1992, in salons such as the Indépendants Normands, the Rouen teaching hospital and Audace, before the galleries followed.

What he paints

His subjects come from ordinary life and from nature: landscapes and seascapes, portraits, still lifes, house interiors and street scenes. He works mainly in oil and in watercolour. What sets his figurative painting apart is less the subject than the handling of skies, open space, shorelines and, above all, the figures within them.
