There is no location in this painting. No rooftop, no skyline, no moon: only a mottled field of warm grey that lightens toward the upper left and darkens at the right, brushed in loose overlapping patches like smoke drifting past a window. The figure stands in nothing at all.

The tonal range is narrow on purpose. Everything sits between charcoal and pale stone, with no true black and no white anywhere, and the modelling is achieved by shifting a few values at a time. Chest, shoulders and arms are built from broad flat strokes that describe muscle as planes rather than as anatomy.

The cape drops from the shoulders in two heavy columns that swallow both sides of the frame, and where they meet the background there is often no edge at all, just one grey settling against another. The bat emblem is drawn as a shape very slightly darker than the plate it sits on.

The head is lowered and turned a few degrees to his right, jaw and mouth in shadow, the eyes barely indicated under the cowl. It is a portrait about bearing rather than about expression.
