Batman Standing at Oracle's Gravestone — Print & Oil Painting

The inscription is the reason this picture exists. Cut into the face of a pale stone at the lower right, in Roman capitals, is a single name, and beneath it in smaller letters a line that reads as an epitaph rather than as a title. Everything else in the frame is arrangement; that lettering is the content.

The figure stands just behind and to the left of the stone with one gauntlet resting near its edge, feet apart, head turned slightly down and away. The suit is blue-grey with a yellow oval bat on the chest, an olive-gold belt, black gloves with a row of fins, and a cape that lifts to the right in three heavy folds. He is lit from behind, so the front of the body sits in a cool half shadow throughout.

The setting has been kept vague on purpose. A pale disc of moon behind the shoulder, bare trunks receding into a green-grey mist, no path, no other stones, no boundary. Whether this is a cemetery or a clearing is left open, and the painting is better for not deciding.

The colour is a single desaturated teal from edge to edge, warmed only by the belt and the emblem, and the rendering is airbrushed to a smooth finish with the anatomy modelled in long soft gradients. Contrast is lowest exactly where the face is, which keeps the expression unreadable.

Barbara Gordon wore the cowl first and then, after the Joker put a bullet through her spine, spent years running Gotham's information from behind a screen under the name carved on that stone. A grave with that word on it is a heavier object in this universe than a grave with her own name would be.
