About this artwork

A column of white light rises through the exact centre of this image and splits it in two. Everything else is arranged around that axis: banked cloud on either side, a bat-and-shield emblem hanging above it, and two figures standing with their backs almost touching, one facing out of the left edge, one out of the right.

The handling is photographic rather than painterly. Skin, cape weave and armour plate carry the smooth tonal detail of film, and the piece has been assembled the way a poster is assembled: layered cloud, a lens flare on the axis, a burnt skyline dropped into the lower right corner.

Colour separates the two men more sharply than pose does. Superman is the only saturated thing in the frame, red cape and blue suit against grey vapour, while Batman is drained to gunmetal and charcoal, his cowl holding one cold highlight along the brow. Neither of them looks at the other.

Orange sparks drift up through the lower half, small and slightly out of focus, giving the dead-still air a direction and keeping the symmetry from freezing solid. From our DC Universe collection.
