About this artwork

The yellow arrives first and it arrives as material. It has been dragged on thickly with a loaded brush, ridged where the bristles pulled, brightest at the top of the canvas and breaking into flecks at the edges, and it surrounds the head and shoulders like a halo cut out with a knife.

The figure inside it is painted almost entirely in blacks and browns. The head is tipped back and lifted, chin high, the cowl covering the upper face so that only the mouth, jaw and throat receive any anatomy, and those are modelled in warm flesh tones that stand out sharply against everything around them.

No attempt at smooth rendering is made anywhere. Strokes are left as strokes, several colours sit unmixed within the same passage, and small marks of red and violet appear in the shadows of the cape with no object to explain them. From a few paces the whole thing resolves; up close it is a field of separate decisions.

Low in the canvas a yellow oval emblem sits on the chest, laid on in the same thick pigment as the background, quietly tying the figure to the light behind him. Part of our DC Universe collection. The 1989 movie tribute shows this costume rendered smoothly, and the rainbow splatter figure keeps the paint loud and the drawing clean.
