About this artwork
The background has been built out of two colours and a sponge. Violet fills the upper left and the lower corners, acid green burns behind the right shoulder and above the head, and the two are pushed together with a dabbed mottled texture that never resolves into anything. There is no room, no wall and no light source: only a field chosen to make green hair and white paint sit forward.
Against it the head is turned very slightly to its left and tilted down, which puts the eyes in the top of their sockets and aimed straight out at us. That is the whole picture. The brow is furrowed into four deep horizontal lines, the eyes are pale and ringed in smudged black, and the mouth is open on one side in something between a sneer and the start of a word.
The face has been rendered with an airbrush and a very fine touch: the greasepaint sits in the skin creases rather than on top of them, the red at the corners of the mouth is dragged outward into the cheeks in feathered strokes, and the neck is left grubby and unpainted where the makeup stops.
The hair does the heavy lifting for the silhouette. It is a bright yellow-green, drawn as separate lank curls with light coming through them from behind, and it breaks the outline of the head into something ragged at the top and the sides.
Below the collar the artist has simply stopped: a dark jacket, a shirt, no detail worth naming, all of it dropped into shadow so that nothing competes with the stare. It sits in our DC Universe collection, alongside the same head buried under layers of scratched colour and a loose watercolour version of the face.
