About this artwork
In his left hand, raised to the level of his ear, is a cowl. Not a head: an empty mask, dark grey and slightly crushed, both ears still upright, hanging from his fingers by the brow. Green fluid runs off the top of it in half a dozen threads and catches the light as it falls.
The other hand is busy as well, holding a playing card flat against his cheek. The card carries a small drawing of Harley Quinn in her red and black diamonds, which turns a simple prop into a second joke aimed at somebody else entirely.
Between the two hands the face is built from fine hatching rather than flat colour: grey-white skin cross-hatched at the temples and under the eyes, green brows, a nose sharpened to a point, and a grin so wide that the corners of the mouth pass outside the line of the cheekbones. The hair is swept straight back into a high glossy peak.
The background is city light thrown completely out of focus, magenta and violet, which flattens the space and pushes both objects forward. From our DC Universe collection. The card held against his cheek repeats one half of this gesture, and Harley Quinn with her painted bat gives the figure on that card a picture of her own.
