About this artwork
The card is the smallest object in the frame and the best painted thing in it. Held up at the left on two gloved fingertips, it is a plain white rectangle carrying a fine line drawing of a jester in cap and bells, with the word JOKER printed at two opposite corners. Everything else in the image is broad; this alone is fine.
The face beside it has been built from flat blocks of colour set down side by side with no blending at all, in the manner of a painted-by-numbers panel. White, cream and pale grey make the skin, the eye sockets are filled with solid dark green and black, and the mouth is one unbroken red shape running from cheek to cheek.
The head is tilted so that the right side takes all the light and the left drops away into the ground. Both eyes are turned sideways toward the card rather than out at us, half lidded, which gives the picture a private quality, as though we had walked in on a man admiring his own signature.
The background is close to black, with a few strands of dark hair drawn across the top edge and a suggestion of purple collar at the bottom left. From our DC Universe collection. The cartoon version with a card at his cheek plays the same gesture at full volume, and the Joker fanning playing cards turns one card into a handful.
