About this artwork
Two thirds of this image are empty on purpose. A pale, almost featureless plain fills the bottom, a bank of dark cloud fills the top, and the pyramids occupy a narrow horizontal strip between them, softened by haze until their edges are barely edges.
There is no colour anywhere. The picture runs from charcoal in the upper corners to near-white at the base, and the three monuments are separated from one another only by small shifts of grey: the nearest just dark enough to read, the furthest almost gone.
Then the rider. A single horse and rider, no taller than a fingernail in reproduction, canter across the lower middle from left to right, black against the pale ground. Cover them with a thumb and the picture becomes an abstraction. Uncover them and the pyramids acquire their real height.
The finish is photographic rather than painterly, with long soft gradients and no visible brush anywhere, which suits a subject reduced this far. Kept in our Egypt collection. Hang it near the heavy gold impasto version and the two arguments about the same site stand side by side.
