About this artwork
Four beams of white light fan out from a single point near the base of the tower, and they are the armature of the whole composition: they cut the red sky into segments, they lift the eye up the shaft of the building, and they are the only clean white in a picture otherwise made of embers and smoke.
The tower is the Lucky 38, given the exact silhouette the game does, a slim column swelling into a flared observation deck with a spire on top. Around its feet the Strip is packed into a low band of casinos, marquees and neon, the Lucky 38 sign legible in its circle on the right and the welcome sign leaning at the left.
A wall runs the full width in front of them. It is plain, high and unlit, and it turns a skyline into a display case, which is precisely its function in the story: the Strip is walled, and admission is a transaction.
Down in the foreground, small and dark, one figure stands on the road with a rifle across the shoulder, facing the light. The paint here is thick and roughly handled, the ground built from broad brown strokes, the neon dropped in as short hot dashes. It sits in our Fallout collection, a companion to the Nuka-Cola poster for another piece of pre-war salesmanship that outlived its audience.
