Daenerys Targaryen Stands Before a Roaring Dragon — Print & Oil Painting

Two great curves of white cloth organise the whole lower half of the picture. One sweeps in from the left and crosses under her hands; the other rises from the bottom right and closes over the first, and between them they enclose the figure in a soft lens shape. They are painted as thin translucent fabric, and light passes through both of them.

Everything to the right of that is teeth. A dragon head, dark red-brown and heavily boned, is thrown back with the jaws wide open and the throat visible, a single orange eye burning above the hinge of the mouth. Its wing lifts across the top right corner, and small red petals or scraps of membrane are being carried up past it.

She is entirely still in the middle of it. A pale gown with a fine chain and pendant at the throat, braided hair falling forward over both shoulders, hands folded low, the head slightly tilted and the eyes on the viewer. The noise is all on one side of the canvas and the silence is all on the other, and the fabric is what separates them.

She is called the Unburnt because she walked into a funeral pyre and came out of it with her hair burned away and her skin untouched, and pictures like this one, calm woman and screaming animal in the same frame, are all versions of that idea.
