Daenerys Targaryen Walks Beside Her Dragon at Night — Print & Oil Painting

The only warm light in this picture is inside an animal's mouth. The dragon's jaws are open at the left of the frame and a soft yellow-white glow sits between the teeth and along the lower jaw, throwing a faint warmth onto the snow immediately beneath. Everything else, without exception, is blue.

That blue is a night with snow in it. A field of pale drifts runs across the bottom of the canvas, mist lies over the middle distance, and behind it stand the black uprights of some ruined timber structure, three or four posts and a fallen beam, drawn with just enough detail to read as the remains of something and not enough to say what.

She walks at the right in a heavy dark cloak with fur across the shoulders, the fabric swinging out behind her, silver hair loose to the waist. The dragon's head is longer than she is tall, and its neck runs back into the dark towards a body that is never fully shown. Neither of them is looking at the other.

The word she uses to make them burn is dracarys, High Valyrian for dragonfire, and the painting has caught the half-second before rather than after: the light is still in the throat. Filed in our Game of Thrones collection, alongside the low view of her beneath dragons in the clouds.
