Half-Life Corridor in Quiet Decay — Print & Oil Painting

There is nobody in it. No figure, no silhouette, no shadow cast by anything living, and after a moment that absence becomes the actual subject. The room has clearly been used, and recently enough that the floor is still wet, and there is no one left in it to explain why.

The space is institutional and slightly too grand for its purpose: a high ceiling with a moulded cornice, walls of pale stone blocks with a rail running along them at waist height, and two tall multi-paned windows on the left admitting a flat grey light. A wooden double door sits shut in the far wall. Along the left run a vending machine and two waste bins; along the right, a low bench that continues out of frame.

The floor does all the atmospheric work. It is tiled, polished and standing in a thin film of water, so the windows come back up as long pale smears and the room is doubled underfoot. Loose paper lies about in two or three places. Nothing is broken; everything is neglected, which is a much harder note to hit.

The series it comes from made its name on exactly this kind of interval: the corridor before, the empty platform, the room with the lights still on. Painted and hung on a wall, that interval stops being a loading area between events and becomes the whole picture.
