Hogwarts Castle Across the Lake at Sunset — Print & Oil Painting

The light comes from the left and it is doing everything. A low sun sits somewhere off the edge of the frame, and the whole left half of the canvas is a wash of pale gold with the mountains behind reduced to two flat lavender shapes. Nothing over there is described at all.

The castle stands on its promontory in the centre, treated as a dark silhouette with only the towers and the roofline picked out: spires, a clock face, a long crenellated range running away to the right, a viaduct carried on arches across the slope beneath. Almost none of the architecture is drawn. It is implied by the edge where stone meets sky.

Beneath it, the lake. Its surface takes the sun as a broad gold sheet at the left and darkens to bronze and near black under the cliff, with the castle throwing a long broken reflection down into it. Pines crowd the bank at the lower right, and a single pale bird crosses the sky on the left.

The proportion is very wide, which suits the subject and makes the sky the real event: cloud banked in rose and violet across the top right, gold burning through underneath it. From our Harry Potter collection, alongside the castle seen above the mountains and the boats crossing the lake at night.
