About this artwork
Look at Briseis 1896 and the first thing you notice is that it reads in a calm middle register, with clear but unforced separation of light and dark. red and orange do most of the work. The hues are full without tipping into excess. Its even key makes it one of the easier pieces to place — it neither fights the wall nor disappears into it.
