Whitebeard Unleashes His Quaking Power — Print & Oil Painting

This is a painting with almost no light in it. The measured brightness sits at about a tenth of the scale, and for the first few seconds the eye reads nothing but a purple-black field. Then the shapes arrive in order: two outstretched arms, a bare chest, a seam of red, and finally the thing standing behind him.

What stands behind him is his own flag, enlarged to the size of a building. The skull hangs in the dark with a curved white moustache beneath it and a cross post above, and it is painted as architecture rather than as cloth, cracked and stained, closing off the top half of the frame like a cathedral wall.

Whitebeard is planted below it with both arms flung straight out from the shoulders. Branching white fissures run from each hand, dozens of them, spreading sideways across the canvas like lightning drawn on glass. That is the Gura Gura no Mi, the fruit that lets him crack the air itself, and the artist has chosen to show the cracks rather than the blast.

The colour scheme is one decision carried through without exception: magenta and violet for the field, white for the fissures, and a single red note where the lining of his coat shows. Even the coat itself is drained until it is barely legible.
