The Labyrinth’s Ancient Oath — Print & Oil Painting

Two inks, effectively. A near black that covers most of the surface, and a green that runs from acid at the light source down to deep teal at the edges. There is no third colour anywhere in this image, and the discipline is what gives it the snap of a screen print rather than the softness of a painting.

The structure is a shaft seen from inside. A stone stair spirals down from the top of the frame into a pool at the bottom, and at the head of it a figure stands silhouetted in the light. Roots and gnarled branches wrap the whole picture as a living frame, dense at the corners, thinning where the light gets through. Small winged shapes drift across the void.

At the centre, standing in shallow water with concentric rings spreading around its base, a carved stone pillar with a face worked into it. A slender horned figure reaches toward it from the left; a smaller hooded shape waits at the right. Nothing is explained. The picture is built as a moment of contract rather than a moment of action.

Everything here belongs to the poster tradition rather than to film illustration: heavy black border, line weights that thicken as they leave the light, ornament allowed to become pattern. It will hold up at small sizes because the silhouette does all the work, and it will reward a close look because the linework never repeats itself.
