Krenim Weapon Ship Looming Near a Pale Moon — Print & Oil Painting

A wheel. That is the first reading, and it is not wrong: the vessel is built as a ring of heavy segmented blocks turned around a central aperture, with spars and arms projecting forward from the rim towards the viewer. Radial symmetry is rare in this catalogue and it is deeply unnerving here.

At the hub sits a violet-blue opening, geometric, faceted, glowing from somewhere behind the plane of the ring. Cold white lights are spaced along the outer structures. There is no bridge module, no window row, no obvious bow: nothing that says a person stands anywhere on this thing looking out.

A pale grey moon hangs small at the upper left, and the space between is almost bare. That emptiness is the composition's only measuring stick, and it makes the ring look very large indeed.

What this ship did was worse than firing. It made temporal incursions, erasing a species from history so that the calendar simply closed over the gap, and the man who ran it spent two centuries doing it in the hope of undoing one loss of his own.
