Uhura's Portrait Bathed in Teal Light — Print & Oil Painting

Teal and red, and almost nothing else. The ground is a single wash of blue-green that lightens towards the centre, the tunic is a deep scarlet, and the two sit at opposite ends of the colour wheel, so the figure lifts away from the background without a drawn outline anywhere.

The hair is the piece of engineering the artist has enjoyed most: swept up from the temples into a coiled knot at the crown, a short fringe cut level above the brows, painted blue-black with cool highlights borrowed from the background. Two large gold hoops hang clear of the jaw and catch the same light.

The face is calm and entirely frontal. No smile, no tilt, the gaze level with ours, the modelling smooth and warm against all that cool. Small flecks of red and white are scattered over the field like dust on an old photograph, and they keep the flat background from going dead.

The rank braid stays out of frame and the gold delta sits low on the chest, which leaves the portrait free to work as a portrait: the officer who kept the Enterprise in conversation with everything it met, painted without a console in sight.
