About this artwork
Nothing in this painting has a hard edge. The clouds are laid in with a soft dry brush, the stars are diffused into the ground rather than dotted onto it, and even the hull is described with blurred boundaries, so the ship half belongs to the sky it is crossing.
The design is the refit arrangement: a smooth saucer without deep window rows, a slim neck, flat angular pylons and long tapered nacelles, with a pale blue deflector under the bow. It runs from the left edge of a very wide frame almost to the right, low and level, in no apparent hurry.
The colour is split. Pearl and rose fill the left half and pass behind the saucer; deep red and burnt orange bank up on the right; a grey-blue haze sits along the top. The hull picks up whichever colour it happens to be passing through, which is what makes the ship look weightless.
The proportion is unusual and worth planning for, a long horizontal band rather than a rectangle, better suited to a shelf or a stairwell than to a standard frame. Part of our Star Trek collection. The same rebuilt ship makes her most famous voyage in USS Enterprise Engulfed in V'Ger's Blue Light.
