About this artwork
The viewpoint has been put underneath, which is where almost nobody ever paints a starship. We are below the flight path and slightly ahead of it, so the ship passes over us and the picture is composed of surfaces normally kept out of sight.
What that vantage shows is the flat belly of the saucer, ringed with window rows and cut by two long recessed channels, and the deflector set into the lower hull, glowing a hard blue at the centre of a dark oval. A red running light burns on the flank; the nacelle on the far side is reduced to a bar of blue with a red cap.
The nebula behind is violet going to magenta, thin and dusty rather than dramatic, and it silhouettes as much as it illuminates. Most of the hull sits in half-light, described by its window rows rather than by any highlight.
The effect is closer to aircraft spotting than to heroic portraiture, and that is the appeal: a ship photographed from below by someone who happened to be in the right place.
