Hydralisk Baring Its Blades Under a Night Sky — Print & Oil Painting

The pose is heraldic. The animal faces straight out of the canvas with both scythes swept wide and slightly raised, the body dead centre, the two curved blades mirroring each other left and right. You could lift the figure off the picture and stamp it on a flag without changing a line of it.

The head is the best-drawn passage. A bone hood of overlapping plates, cracked and pitted, sits above a dark face in which two green points burn where eyes would be, and beneath that a mouth of thin needle teeth is held open. The plates read as old: chipped edges, dulled surfaces, a shell that has seen use.

Behind it the night has been given real care. Deep blue-violet across the upper right, torn cloud, a fall of gold light streaming down from the top left corner like the last of a sunset that will not let go, and two winged shapes further off, one close enough to read as a flyer of the same swarm.

The ground tells the rest. Blue-grey rubble and cut stone under the creature, and at the bottom right a slab of terran machinery still carrying its yellow and black hazard stripes, painted by somebody who expected people to read the warning.

Cold blue and warm gold are held apart across the whole surface, which is why the green of those eyes lands as hard as it does. From our Starcraft collection, where the hydralisk clashing with terran marines shows what the blades are actually for.
