About this artwork

Nothing in this vertical panel has a hard edge except the cub. The upper two thirds go to a lion's head built entirely out of light: pale blue, white and indigo, the mane dissolving outward into a star field so that no boundary between animal and sky can be located anywhere.

Its eyes are the palest thing on the canvas and they look straight out at the viewer rather than down. Below the jaw, chest and forelegs continue for a while as white vapour and then simply stop being drawn, giving way to a soft amber and violet glow occupying the middle of the panel.

The cub walks forward out of that glow, small and dead centre, painted almost black with a few blue highlights along the back and one on the muzzle. Its tail is up, the front paws are down in shallow water, and the reflection beneath is short and broken. Rounded dark rocks close both bottom corners.

White specks are scattered across the whole surface, dense at the top and thinning as they descend, which binds the apparition and the sky into one substance.
