Thatched Cottage by a Pond With Swans — Print & Oil Painting

The canvas is roughly twice as wide as it is tall and it has been filled the way a catalogue is filled: a path here, a house there, a bridge, a pond, two swans, and flower beds in every remaining gap. Nothing is left empty, nothing overlaps awkwardly, and every item is given its own clear space to be seen in.

The cottage has white walls with dark timber framing, two chimneys, and a thick golden thatch that comes down low over the upper windows in a heavy unbroken curve. That thatch is the best painted thing in the work, laid in with fine directional strokes that follow its shape all the way round the eaves.

Four trees stand behind it and each has been given a different colour: lilac blue at the far left, soft pink blossom behind the roof, orange red to the right of the house, and plain green beyond that. They are arranged the way a colour chart is arranged rather than the way woodland grows.

The right side is water. A still pale green pond carries two white swans, a small wooden footbridge with railings crosses it in the middle distance, and a pale sun hangs low in the sky with two birds beneath it. The surface is smooth and takes almost no reflection, which keeps the swans reading as solid objects.

In the foreground a stone flagged path climbs to the left in shallow steps, edged with dense beds of red, white, yellow and pink flowers painted dab by dab, with a spiky green plant closing the lower right corner. Nothing in the image is specific to any one place: it is a garden view assembled from parts. It belongs to our Vietnam collection, near a rose framed garden path leading to stone pillars and a red roofed house beneath a blossoming tree on a hill.
