Watercolor Harvest of Farmers Bundling Golden Rice — Print & Oil Painting

The medium is doing the describing. The crop is one broad transparent wash of gold laid over white paper, and the individual stalks are dragged back into it with a dry brush while it is still damp, so the grain reads as texture inside a colour rather than as drawing on top of one. Almost nothing in the picture is opaque.

Around fifteen people are spread through the middle band, all of them bent at the waist, all in broad straw hats, dressed in blue, olive, grey and a dull red. Three work in a tight knot at the lower left, close enough that their hats overlap, and the row thins as it goes right until the last figures are single strokes. Bundles of cut stalks lie across the foreground, drawn with fine stiff lines that are the sharpest marks in the work.

Depth is managed by temperature alone. The gold runs unbroken from the bottom edge to a low horizon with no change of scale to help it, and the artist takes it back by cooling it: warm ochre near the viewer, a greyer gold in the middle, a thin band of pale water and a scatter of tiny distant workers at the far side.

Above that the paper is left to breathe. A blue violet mountain range crosses the upper left in two flat washes, a line of dark trees closes the right, and the sky is a pale blue and cream with soft edged cloud and three or four birds. A pale dog stands out in the middle distance, and it is the only thing in the picture that is not working.

Saturation measures moderate, brightness high and contrast low, which is the natural reading of transparent colour on white ground. From our Vietnam collection, near a long line of harvesters strung across a golden hillside and farmers transplanting rice beside a ploughing buffalo.
