Village Gate With a Cart on a Golden Dirt Path — Print & Oil Painting

This is a census of ways to shift a load. A two wheeled handcart is being worked along the path at the lower right, a bicycle stands beside it, a woman at the right edge carries a shoulder pole with two baskets of pink flowers, a figure in red crosses the bridge at the lower left with another pole, and a cart moves through the fields in the far distance. Every person in the painting is carrying something.

The gate holds the centre right, white and two tiered under red tiled roofs, its arched opening dark, standing where the path widens into an open yard. A broad banyan rises immediately behind it and golden thatched roofs run off to the right, so the gate is a threshold between the yard and the village rather than a monument on its own.

Two bodies of water shape the ground. A blue green canal comes down from the middle distance and turns away to the lower left, crossed by a small humped wooden bridge, and a lotus pond closes the bottom left corner. The ochre path threads between them, and every piece of activity in the work happens on that strip.

Colour has been placed rather than spread. The ground is warm ochre, the water cool, the fields flat yellow, the trees green, and three hot notes are spaced evenly across the width: a red flowering shrub at the centre left, the cart of pink blooms at the right, the red figure on the bridge. Nothing else is allowed to be warm.

Above it all the sky is a clean blue with white cloud and a pair of birds, and the finish stays smooth and even from the near flower bed to the far ridge. It belongs to our Vietnam collection, near an ox cart passing a banyan tree below distant blue mountains and flower sellers crossing a bridge beside golden rice paddies.
