Bicycle Against a Weathered Brick Alley Wall — Print & Oil Painting

About this artwork
The wall has a history and the painting reads it out course by course. Old brick shows in three separate patches, each a different colour and bond, with grey render still clinging around them in flakes. A barred window has been bricked down to half its original height. A newer pale block sits above the lintel. Moss and damp run in vertical streaks below the sill. Nothing has been invented: every mark records a repair, a leak or a failure.
Finish is the method here. Every brick edge, every rust bloom on the bars and every joint in the paving is fully described, and the paint is laid smoothly with no visible stroke anywhere. Against that, the passages left soft, the green canopy at the top left and the deep shadow at the far end of the alley, feel deliberately withheld.
The title names one bicycle and the picture shows two. They lean together against the base of the wall, frames overlapping, the nearer one dark with a laden rear rack and a pale bundle tied over the front, the second just behind it with its wheel and handlebars clearly visible. A long pole rests across them both.
The left corner is a small still life of stored things: green plastic crates stacked four high with red lettering on their sides, a folded metal gate, a satellite dish tipped on its mount, a length of blue ladder. All of it is pressed into the narrowest part of the frame, which makes the swept paving in front of the bicycles feel wide.
That paving is worked stone by stone, cool grey shot with lilac, receding in shallow perspective toward the bottom left. A blue grey painted pilaster closes the right edge and stops the eye from leaving. The measured value is low and the saturation moderate, which the brick and the shadow between them account for. Part of our Vietnam collection, near a narrow alley with bougainvillea cascading over weathered walls and a child playing with a dog on a bougainvillea lined brick lane.
