Serene Sunset Over Ha Long Bay — Print & Oil Painting

A single column of light runs from the horizon down to the bottom edge of the canvas, and the whole picture is organised around it. The sun sits low and small at the centre, barely brighter than the sky it hangs in, but its reflection on the water is enormous: a broad band of white gold that widens as it comes toward the viewer, broken into horizontal ripples that grow longer and looser near the foreground.

The limestone islands are painted as pure silhouette. No detail survives inside them, only the outline, and the artist separates them by tone rather than by drawing. The two nearest are almost black, the middle group a warm red brown, the furthest a dull ochre barely darker than the water behind it. That one device does all the work of distance in a picture that contains no perspective lines at all.

Two rowing boats sit on the water, one either side of the light. Each carries two figures, given as small dark shapes with no faces and nothing described beyond the angle of a back and the line of an oar. They are placed just off the centre and at slightly different depths, which stops the composition from splitting evenly in two. The hulls are long, low and pointed at both ends, and each throws a short broken reflection under it.

The colour stays inside one family: deep red at the upper corners, orange across the middle band of sky, then yellow and white where the light concentrates. Nothing cool appears anywhere. The measured saturation is high while the overall value stays low, which is exactly what gives the piece heat without brightness.
