Abstract Mosaic of Pastel Rooftops in a Hillside Village — Print & Oil Painting

About this artwork
One stroke, repeated several hundred times, makes this entire painting. It is a short flat rectangle pulled with the knife, roughly twice as wide as it is tall, and every house in the village is one of them. The picture is therefore a count rather than a scene, and its subject is density.
The ground is lavender and it never disappears. It runs between the strokes everywhere, so the marks read as separate objects with air around them rather than as a continuous mass, and the whole canvas stays pale and open. White is the most common note on top of it, followed by clear cadmium yellow, vermilion, coral, turquoise and rose, and the coloured marks are distributed evenly enough that no corner takes over.
Roofs are indicated by a second, smaller stroke set at a slight angle above the first, and dark windows by a single stab of umber or near black. Those dark stabs are what make the field legible: without them the surface would be decoration, and with them the eye starts assigning fronts, doors and shaded sides to shapes that contain none of those things.
Scale drops as the eye moves up. The strokes along the bottom edge are the largest and most separated, those across the middle band tighten, and toward the top they shrink to flecks against pale yellow and white before the surface opens into bare lavender at the upper edge. That gradient is the only depth cue the painting uses, and it is enough to make the massing feel like a slope.
The measured brightness is the highest of any work in this group and the saturation among the lowest, which is the signature of coloured marks scattered across a pale ground. From our Vietnam collection, near yellow and blue light broken across an old quarter facade and an abstract blue skyline in textured brushstrokes.
