Golden-Toned Portrait of a Woman with Downcast Eyes — Print & Oil Painting

The head fills the canvas and there is nothing else in it. No hands, no setting, no props: just a face, a neck and the top of a collar, cropped so that the crown of the hair touches the upper edge. That decision leaves the picture with only one thing to be about, and it is the modelling of the face.

Background and skin are drawn from the same family, and that is the difficulty the painter has set. Ochre, raw sienna, wheat and olive run in broad vertical drags behind her, and the same colours reappear in the cheek, the jaw and the forehead. The face separates from the ground only by value and by a slightly cooler edge along the left side, never by a change of hue.

Her eyes are lowered and almost closed, the lashes drawn as fine dark curves and the lids given a faint green grey. The brows are soft, the nose is modelled with a single warm shadow along one side, and the mouth is the one place with any real colour: a muted terracotta rose, the upper lip darker than the lower.

The hair carries the cool notes. It is worked in blue black and deep indigo with warm brown lights dragged through it, swept back from a centre parting and gathered behind, and its coolness is what keeps the warm face from going flat. A small pale earring catches light at the lobe.

The brushwork stays open. Individual strokes are visible in the neck and the collar, the shoulders are barely finished, and the canvas texture shows through at the edges. The measured hue falls in the oranges and reds with moderate saturation, which is the honest reading of a picture painted almost entirely in one warm range.
