About this artwork
The head arrives from the upper right and it is far too large for the town underneath it. Jaws part on a double row of pale teeth, the muzzle is armoured in overlapping plates of dark iron, and two orange eyes burn in sockets set back behind a shelf of bone. The neck runs back and up out of the frame, so no part of this animal is fully contained by the picture.
Molten light shows at every joint. Thin seams of orange and white run between the plates of the jaw, down the throat, along the shoulder and out into the wing struts, painted as cracks in a shell rather than as decoration. The wings themselves are lit from behind by the fire below, so the membranes glow a deep translucent red between black ribs.
The town is the best part of the composition. Squat stone towers with steep blue-slate roofs stand along the bottom edge, a half-timbered hall sits between them with light in its windows, and every one of those buildings is burning: orange running down the walls, flame filling the doorways, smoke rolling up into the animal's chest. The architecture is drawn crisply and at a domestic scale, which is what makes the size of the head land.
Colour is pushed close to the ceiling here, and nearly the entire reading belongs to one red. Sky, fire, wings, stone and smoke have all been pulled toward the same hue, with the blue roofs as the only relief anywhere in the picture.
The betrayal that made this creature was a matter of paperwork before it was a matter of fire. He asked the other dragon flights to lend a measure of their power to a golden disc he was forging on their behalf, they agreed because he was the one they trusted with the earth itself, and he used the finished object on them at the first opportunity. Everything afterwards, including the burning street in this painting, is downstream of a signature. From our World of Warcraft collection, alongside the same aspect towering over a volcanic ridge and the same wings seen from a distance above a burning battlefield.
