About this artwork
A hand comes straight at the viewer out of the lower left and it is the only thing in the picture that is properly in focus. Five thick black-furred fingers spread wide, the pads on the palm picked out, the wrist crossed by a leather cuff, and the whole thing enlarged well past what perspective would allow. Everything behind it is haze.
That haze is gold. A single warm light sits directly behind his head and blows out into the middle of the canvas, so the twisted trees at both edges are reduced to dark silhouettes and the ground is barely indicated at all. The measured saturation is high and it is one colour from corner to corner, which makes the black and white of the animal read almost as a graphic mark.
He is a pandaren under a conical straw hat, the brim wide enough to touch both sides of the head, tipped forward so the eyes sit in its shadow. Those eyes are a clear green and they are looking straight out. The muzzle is white, the eye patches are black, the ears round, and the mouth is set in something between a grin and a grimace.
Behind the right shoulder a long staff is carried diagonally across the back, and at the left a dark gourd hangs on a cord, glazed and stoppered. Below the collar the tunic is pale with round green stones fastening it. The costume is a traveller's and it is drawn with less attention than the hand.
He is from a place that moves. The pandaren of his line grew up on a landmass riding the back of a turtle large enough to carry forests, and he left it as a young brewer for the ordinary reason that the ingredients he wanted were not there, which is how the least political character in this collection ended up walking through everybody else's wars. A picture that gives him a hat, a gourd and a hand held out through the light has him doing exactly what he does. From our World of Warcraft collection, next to the same brewmaster standing ready in a bamboo grove and a wanderer of the same people carrying a cub on his shoulder.
