Scale is the entire subject and it is established by one tiny detail. At the bottom of the canvas, on a plain of dark rock, a single figure walks away from us carrying a small teal light. Measure the picture against him and the structure above becomes almost unreadable: a stone gateway of at least a hundred feet, and rising out of it a carved dragon head and shoulders that dwarf the gate in turn.
The monument has been built and then broken open. Between the carved masonry courses, lava runs in wide sheets and pools in the joints, and the whole chest of the thing glows like a furnace seen through a grating. A thin bright thread drips from the lower jaw. Whether the fire is contained inside the sculpture or is what the sculpture is made of, the paint declines to say.
Two black wings sweep out from behind the head into the smoke, ragged along the trailing edge, and their tips leave the frame at the upper corners. Below them the carved arch of the doorway is decorated with a fan of stone rays, and cliffs recede into ash-grey haze on both sides.
The palette is severe: charcoal, ash, and a single band of orange running vertically through the middle of the picture from the jaw to the ground. The measured brightness is very low. Only that walking figure and his cold green lamp are allowed to be another colour, and they are the size of a fingernail.
He came up from underneath. The world in these paintings has a plane of stone beneath it, a country of rock and crystal held together by a single pillar, and when he forced his way out through it into daylight the pillar broke, which is why the earth above buckled, the coasts moved and the sea came inland. A picture of a colossal dragon rising out of a stone gate, with a person walking at its feet who is not going to be able to do anything about it, is the whole event in one frame. Shown in our World of Warcraft collection with the same creature roaring amid rubble and flame and a lesser dragon of his flight painted in fire and smoke.
