Theseus Battling the Minotaur — Print & Oil Painting

Almost the whole canvas is brown: wet stone, old mortar, a barrel vault that swallows itself in shadow behind the fight. Into that the painter has dropped one violent red, a cloak thrown out behind the running figure and lit as though the fabric were the only lamp in the room. Everything else burns at half strength, so the eye finds the red first and then follows the arm down.

The hold is the real subject. The hero has closed his left hand around the base of a horn and hauled the head sideways and up, opening the throat, while the right drives a straight double-edged blade in under the jaw. His weight is thrown onto a bent front leg, the back foot still flat on the rubble in its sandal, the short tunic dragged tight across the hip. There is no distance anywhere in the picture: the two bodies are already touching.

It is worth noticing what the artist has done with the creature. The Athenian story gives the thing in the maze a bull's head on a man's body; here it is animal throughout, a heavy crouching mass of dark hide with horns swept low and back, and forepaws ending in long splayed claws instead of hooves. It braces itself the way a bear would, and the open mouth shows a row of teeth no bull ever carried.

The masonry does the background storytelling: a dressed stone arch behind the beast, a second passage opening on the right, broken slabs underfoot. Corridors that lead somewhere and corridors that lead nowhere. In the myth both the sword and the thread came from Ariadne at the entrance, and the canvas keeps that errand out of frame entirely, giving the whole surface to the instant of contact.
