About this artwork

The green copper dome on the left is where the eye lands first, and it fixes the geography at once: a ribbed cupola with its lantern, a lower dome and two small ones beside it, all sitting on a warm stone basilica with a plain brick flank. An Italian city, seen from well above its own streets.

The city is painted as pure roofscape. Terracotta tiles, chimneys, a crenellated tower or two, a hundred small facades in cream, pink and pale yellow, and then a wash of blue haze that swallows the far quarters and turns the entire background into weather.

At the right a dark brick tower rises out of the foreground under a red conical cap, and on its parapet a hooded figure crouches with one blade drawn, watching whatever is happening below. He is close to a silhouette and takes up very little room, which is the correct proportion for a vantage point.

White pigeons scatter across the middle of the frame and give the empty air a scale of its own. From our Assassin's Creed collection, and the street-level ambush drawn as a comic panel meets the same city at pavement height.
