About this artwork

A great spoked wheel stands upright behind the figure, filling the left half of the canvas, and its rim overlaps a pale disc of moon so that the two circles read almost as one. It is the strongest shape in the picture and the reason the whole thing feels ceremonial rather than violent.

That wheel is a weapon. Alfred, who serves the Executioners in their long campaign against the Vilebloods of Cainhurst, carries Logarius' Wheel together with a rifle, and both are here: the rifle held across the body in both hands, its barrel and stock the only crisply drawn objects anywhere in the frame.

He wears a peaked hood and a heavy coat worked with pale embroidery down the front and around the hem, and the figure is painted in ink washes laid wet into wet, so the edges bleed and no contour is ever quite fixed. The face under the hood is a dark blank.

Dark red blooms are scattered into the corners like blown blossom, and they carry the only warmth in a picture that is otherwise all greys. From our Bloodborne collection, next to the same character given a face and an expression.
