About this artwork

One long arc of fire cuts through the picture and nothing else in it carries any colour at all. The weapon has been swung in a full circle, and the trail it leaves runs from the bottom left corner up the right side and back across the top, dissolving into thousands of orange sparks scattered over the whole frame.

Inside that circle the hunter has been stopped at the end of the swing, low in a wide stance with the near leg braced and the coat swept out behind. Long pale hair blows forward across the face, a broad hat sits low on the head, and the figure is painted black on black with only its edges catching the light of the fire.

Behind it all is Gothic masonry, columns and arches worked so far down in value that the architecture is felt rather than seen. Loose rubble and scattered debris lie across the floor at the level of the feet.

The image works because it obeys one rule without exception: if it is not burning, it is grey. From our Bloodborne collection, where the beaked hunter with her curved blade uses the same restricted palette in a completely different key.
