About this artwork

There is barely any anatomy in this painting. The beast has been assembled out of electricity: long white and cyan arcs that snake across the canvas, thicken into what might be a spine, split into what might be ribs, then wander off into the dark again. Only the skull is solid, a hard pale form low in the centre right with the jaw hanging open.

The brushwork is deliberately coarse. Wide flat strokes of slate, brown and ultramarine block in a cave floor and a rising bank behind it, and not one of them is refined afterwards. At normal viewing distance they resolve into rock. Closer in they are simply marks.

Darkbeast Paarl is the lightning-wreathed skeleton held in the prison beneath Yahar'gul, a beast worn down to bone that still carries a charge. Painting it as a discharge rather than as a body is the cleverest decision in the piece: what you see is what the thing does, not what it is.

Colour is held to two notes, a heavy blue-grey and the near-white of the arcs, and the contrast between them is the entire light source. Part of our Bloodborne collection, next to the hunter standing at the lip of a black cavern, the same underworld with the current switched off.
