Borderlands 2 Vibrant Chaos — Print & Oil Painting

Orange arrives first and never lets go. The background is a poured, splattered field of it with black ink flung across the upper corners and a hard yellow band down the right edge, and the whole thing sits closer to a screen-printed gig poster than to a painting.

At the centre, filling most of the height, is the bandit mask that has served the series as a signature from the start: a white hood over the skull, two cyan eye slits, a round filter disc over the mouth, buckled straps holding it on. Both hands are raised beside it, fingers spread, wrists bandaged.

Everything is drawn with a heavy black outline, filled with flat colour and then given one pass of hatched shading. That is the house style, and it survives enlargement better than almost any other method: at poster size the contours stay crisp and the flat areas stay flat.

Around the edges the composition behaves like a film sheet. A vehicle with a gunner charges in from the left, a cluster of armed figures advances at the right, and the title sits across the top in yellow slab letters with a heavy drop shadow. This is publicity art rather than a scene, and it makes no attempt to pretend otherwise.

Filed in our Borderlands collection. The later piece with the halo and the golden guns takes the same masked figure and rebuilds him as a devotional panel.
