Batman Standing Tall in a Blood-Red Haze — Print & Oil Painting

Two inks, and no more. The whole picture is black line on a saturated crimson ground, with every intermediate value produced by how densely the black is laid down: open hatching on the lit surfaces, tight crosshatch through the mid-tones, solid fill in the deepest shadow. No third colour appears anywhere.

The viewpoint is low, taken from beneath a jutting ledge on which the figure stands with his feet apart and his weight fully settled. That ledge cuts across the bottom right of the frame as a pale wedge, and it is the only thing in the image that is neither the man nor the air around him.

The body is drawn with real anatomical attention: the plated forearm, the segmented thigh, the clawed gauntlet held slightly away from the hip, the chest emblem worked into the armour instead of laid on top of it. The head is small in proportion and turned down to his right, which exaggerates the height still further.

Behind him the red is finely speckled, as though sprayed, and it deepens toward the upper left where the cape reaches back into it. Part of our DC Universe collection.
