About this artwork

The picture is built as pressure from the left. Five figures advance from that side in a loose wedge with their weapons already out, and the right third is held by one enormous red shape that does not need to move at all. Every diagonal in the composition runs the same way.

The demon is painted in ox blood and crimson, the skull ridged and split by a wide grin, a crown of horns swept back off the brow, small orange eyes set deep, and a mass of black spines fanning out behind the shoulders. Only the head and one shoulder are in frame. The scale is established by leaving the rest of it out.

Each hero gets one clear silhouette. Furthest forward stands the Necromancer, white haired and grey skinned in dark plate with a horned skull worn on the pauldron, a curved bone blade in one hand and blue fire opening in the palm of the other, a small risen skeleton already shambling up behind him. Beyond them a caster in green throws lightning between two floating orbs, an armoured figure drops in from above, a hooded fighter with paired blades comes in low, and a bare-chested barbarian holds the right flank with an axe and a short sword.

The ground is ochre dust littered with skulls and broken bone, with a single blue crystal glowing in the middle of it. The palette is narrow on purpose, olive and dust and old gold, so the red of the demon and the blue of the magic are the only saturated things present.
