Divine Lightning Over Sanctuary's Ruins — Print & Oil Painting

The format is a wide letterbox and the light is placed dead centre, which makes the whole image a symmetry. Out of a burning white core, broad ribbons of lightning sweep left and right in long paired curves that reach both edges of the frame, close enough to wings that the reading is unavoidable.

Inside the glare, at the very centre, stands a small dark upright form. It is burned out almost to nothing and given no detail whatsoever, which is a far more convincing way to paint something too bright to look at than any amount of rendering would be.

Beneath it an army stands in ranks. A wall of rounded shields runs the entire width of the picture, shoulder to shoulder, and behind it rise dozens of tall thin standards carrying pale banners and pierced sunburst finials of dark metal. Not one figure is described individually.

The ground in front is wet black stone veined with glowing red cracks, and two vertical shafts of red light stand at the right edge against all that white. Heaven and Hell are each given one colour and set in the same frame.
