Divinity Original Sin Battle in the Flames — Print & Oil Painting

The closest figures are the ones you cannot see. A dozen heads and shoulders crowd the bottom third of the frame, painted as flat dark green shapes with no features at all, and the entire battle takes place over the top of them. You are standing in the horde, looking through it.

Above that ring of silhouettes, a red haired woman in white and gold holds the centre, arms opening outward, the sleeves of her surcoat trailing. A knight in full gold plate presses in from the left with a straight sword. A tusked, roaring brute fills the top right corner. A single face floats at the top left, half lost in the smoke.

The floor has split into a lattice of molten orange, and it is the only light source in the painting. Everything is lit from below: chins, undersides of arms, the inner curve of the knight's helmet. That upward light is what makes the silhouettes read as black rather than as figures, and it is what pushes the saturation of the whole canvas into the highest register in this lot.

Divinity: Original Sin builds its fights out of the ground itself, with oil, fire, water and poison spreading across surfaces and combining into worse things. A battlefield that is literally burning underfoot is not decoration in this series; it is the combat system drawn as a picture.
