Pyramids in Amber Hour — Print & Oil Painting

The vantage point is the surprise: Giza seen from the air, high enough that the three great pyramids fall into a diagonal across the frame, low enough that late sun still rakes their western faces into gold.

What the altitude reveals is the crowding. The plateau is not an empty desert but the edge of a city, and the upper third of the image is nothing but the flat roofs of Giza pressing right up against the archaeological line. Between the two runs a thin road and a strip of scrub: the whole negotiation between a modern town and a Fourth Dynasty cemetery, reduced to a few metres of dust.

The three principal monuments were raised for Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, and the smaller subsidiary pyramids at the lower left belong to the same complexes. The picture also shows what postcards leave out, the field of mastaba tombs laid around them in blocks, a grid of low rectangles that reads almost like the foundations of a town.

Colour is held to a narrow band of amber, rose and blue-grey, and the contrast is deliberately soft, so the pyramids sit inside the haze instead of in front of it. It is a quiet treatment of an image everyone thinks they already know. It sits in our Egypt collection as a close companion to the same plateau at dawn, where fog removes the city entirely.
