Pyramids in Morning Mist — Print & Oil Painting

Fog has been used here as a horizon. It lies across the middle of the picture in one pale band, and the three pyramids rise out of it as flat grey triangles with no surface detail at all, which is exactly what happens to a stone monument when the light behind it is stronger than the light on it.

The sky above is a long gradient: cold blue at the top edge, then a wide field of cream and apricot where the sun sits just outside the frame on the left. Below the mist the necropolis reappears in cool shadow, trenches and enclosure walls and the roofs of the modern town picked out in small grey marks.

Two long shadows do the composing. Thrown from the nearest pyramids, they run down and to the right across the entire lower half, blue against sand, and they fix the hour more precisely than anything else in the image.

Saturation is very low and the contrast is carried almost entirely by that one bright horizontal, so the picture survives at small sizes as three shapes and a line. Filed in our Egypt collection.
