Malenia Standing Amid a Field of Spears — Print & Oil Painting

The ground has been planted with weapons. Spears, lances and long blades stand upright out of the earth across the whole lower half of the canvas, dozens of them, all rendered as flat black silhouettes and each leaning at a slightly different angle, so that the field reads as something grown rather than something arranged.

Behind them the sky is alight. Gold at the horizon, orange above it, then a heavy bank of near black cloud rolling in across the top third, laid on in thick opaque strokes with the brush marks left where they fell. The light source sits low and central, and every object on the field is backlit by it.

The figure stands at the left, three quarters turned away, with the entire weight of the picture on the other side of the frame. Gold plate at the arm and shoulder, a horned helm, a long red cloak and longer red hair streaming to the left, and a straight blade held down and out to the right so that its line runs on into the standing spears.

The finish is oil-like: soft, blended, low on detail, nearer to nineteenth century history painting than to concept art, and it treats its subject the way that tradition treated its generals.
