Malenia Walking Through a Fiery Battlefield — Print & Oil Painting

One line runs the entire width of this canvas. It is the blade, held out and down from a hand at the right and reaching almost to the left edge, its tip lowered until it very nearly touches the ground, and every other element in the composition is measured against that single long horizontal.

Above it, weather. The sky is a rolling mass of orange and blood red with a hot yellow core burning somewhere behind the smoke, and the whole of it is painted loosely enough that cloud, dust and fire are never fully separated from one another.

The figure walks in from the right: gold-plated at shoulder and arm, helm horned and set low over the face, a red cloak and a great weight of red hair dragged sideways by the same wind that is moving the smoke. The long skirt of the armour is dark and heavy and reads almost as a column.

Across the field stand lances flying narrow red pennants, a dozen or more, driven at intervals into ground burned back to ash. They diminish evenly into the distance and set the scale of the walk.
