About this artwork

Very little here is described. The paint is dragged, wiped and then left, so that a cloak, an arm and a stretch of ground are stated with the same three or four strokes and the eye is made to complete almost everything. It is the loosest handling in the collection and it asks the most of whoever is looking.

Two things are finished. The first is the helm, gold, its visor cut into a row of narrow slots that reads from any distance as a set of teeth, with a small winged ornament above. The second is the hair, which rises off the helm in flame shapes instead of falling, and gives the figure a burning head in a picture that contains no fire.

The body below is a column of grey-brown drapery running to the bottom edge, with one hand raised at the chest holding a long shaft that angles away to the left. Whether that shaft is a staff or a sword the painting never says.

Around the figure the ground breaks into feathery forms, part smoke and part foliage, painted in the same browns and rusts as everything else, so that background and subject share a single substance. Warm throughout, close to monochrome, and best at a size where the strokes can still be read as strokes.
