Enchanting Hogwarts Classroom — Print & Oil Painting

Nobody is sitting down. The desks run away from us in long ranks, each with an open book on it and a bench pulled out ready, and every place is empty. A room laid out for a full class is holding nobody, and that emptiness is what the picture is for.

The ceiling is the reason to keep looking. Enormous timber ribs rise out of the walls and cross overhead in a forest of pointed arches, so heavy and so closely spaced that the space reads more like the inside of a hull than like a hall. Grey daylight comes down between them in hard parallel shafts, full of dust.

Small dark shapes hang in those shafts, a dozen or so, limbs spread, none of them large enough to identify. They are the only movement in the picture, and keeping them unresolved is more unsettling than naming them would have been.

At the far end a red and gold hanging catches the last of the light, a single robed figure stands beside it, and shelves of books recede behind. A stone gallery and a curving stair fill the right side. The whole thing is rendered rather than painted, with real depth of field and a cold neutral cast to the greys.
